Alexis Goldstein is a writer and activist currently serving as the Communications Director for the nonprofit The Other 98%. She runs the website BecauseFinanceIsBoring.com, whose mission is to break down financial news and topics in a fun and non-intimidating way (which the site often achieves through a healthy dose of cat photos). She is also a member of the Debt Collective. Unions build collective power by organizing workers. The Debt Collective works to build power by organizing debtors.
Alexis co-hosts three podcasts:
- HumorlessQueers, a monthly podcast covering Wall Street and Mass Surveillance, in a way that doesn’t make you want to die. Co-hosted with Kade Crockford.
- Criticize After Dinner, which reviews Hollywood movies through a radical, leftist lens. Co-hosted with @sabokitty.
- Disorderly Conduct, a finance and economic podcast co-hosted with Jesse Myerson
Alexis has also taught dozens of classes and hundreds of students with Girl Develop It, a group that conducts low-cost programming classes where women can learn in a non-intimidating environment.
Before Alexis Occupied Wall Street, Wall Street occupied Alexis. She spent seven years working in technology on Wall Street. She worked in both the cash equity and equity derivatives spaces. Her focus ranged from the development of client-facing, realtime cash trading systems to creating proprietary software for equity option pricing and volatility surface modeling.
Alexis has worked with Strike Debt, No Fare Hikes, and participated in the Foreclose the Banks OWS campaign. Over the summer of 2012, the group conducted a series of actions aimed at bringing accountability to Wall Street, including an action at Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office, asking how we could help the Financial Fraud Task Force and bring accountability to those responsible for the economic crisis.
Though no longer currently active with the group, Alexis was a co-author of Occupy the SEC's 325-page comment letter to the financial regulators urging them towards a strong Volcker Rule.
Alexis is the founder of aut faciam, a technical training company. She wrote Learning CSS3 Animations, and co-authored HTML5 & CSS3 for The Real World by Sitepoint.
